Full Description

Built in 1928 a modest terrace of almshouses, or Cottage Homes as they were more fashionably termed at the time of building. Symmetrical. Mullioned windows and paired entrances in recsessed porches with broad round-arched openings. {1} Four almshouses bequeathed by John Speak, the head of a Yorkshire spinning firm, in 1928. The foundation stone transcription reads: 'These cottage homes were built by John Speak, The Grange, Kirton. AD1928 in thankfulness to God for His many mercies.' Provision was made for four spinsters or widows of good nature. {2}
