Full Description

Site of the shrunken settlement of Asperton. The village's name is thought to derive from the Old English personal name 'Osfrith' and the Old English word 'tun', meaning 'Osfrith's farmstead'. Listed in 1060 as 'Osfyryhtunae', the orignial 'Os' prefix was later replaced with the Old Norse spelling 'As'. {1} This site appears to be identified with the 'Osfyrdtune' mentioned in a pre-Conquest charter, and again with 'Asfortonia' mentioned by H. Hallam. It is potentially an important early settlement site of mid Saxon origin. {2} Remains of the former settlement site can be clearly seen as cropmarks on Google Earth aerial imagery, taken in November 2023. The cropmarks show a variety of linear features, small enclosures likely to be the remains of former tofts and crofts, and larger curvilinear boundaries. The full extent of the settlement site remains uncertain. {3}
