Full Description

The 'Ivorys' is a piece of land on the Wrangle-Friskney parish boundary (which is also the Holland-Lindsey administrative boundary) where a very large building stood within a moat in the form of a parallelogram. Extensive foundations are visible. {1}{2} An old castle called 'Twigrain' is mentioned in the tower records as existing in the neighbourhood of Lindsey and Holland. Ivory Hills falls in Holland. The name is probably a corruption of Twigrain. {3} Moated enclosures are clearly visible at TF 4445 5324, falling in Lindsey and at TF 4441 5296, in Little Iverys and a roughly rectangular depression in the plough, centred at TF 4458 5306 marks the site of the moat. {4} Amorphous earthworks at the sites, which may have been ditched enclosures, are visible in the crop. {5} Site confirmed by fenland survey with finds of medieval pottery and bone. Tile was also abundant and some appears to be waster material so there may have been a kiln nearby. {6}
