Full Description
Cropmarks of a Neolithic long barrow, to the north-east of Welldale Farm, Donington on Bain. Visible on aerial photography taken in 2008 and 1947, as an oval-shaped ditched enclosure, elongated north to south and with maximum dimensions measuring 64m by 18m. The internal mound is visible as the soilmark of a compacted surface. The barrow had been previously overlooked, as it falls within the dense cropmark landscape of an extensive Iron Age or Roman settlement (see MLI84752), as well as being bisected by a modern field boundary. The whole area has been subjected to extensive medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, which, along with the extensive Iron Age/Roman settlement activity, may have levelled the earthwork elements of the barrow. {1}{2}{3}
