Full Description

Former smithy building at Willoughton, located in the centre of the village, on a small 'island' of land formed at the junction of Templefield Road and Northfield Lane. The building is single storey, and is mostly rectangular in shape, though has an outshot to the northern side. The structure is largely built of red bricks, though sits on foundation courses of roughly coursed stone rubble, with the outshot also entirely built of stone. The hipped roof is covered by red pantiles, and has a single brick chimney stack towards the eastern end of the ridge. {1} The building is depicted in its current plan form on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map, published in 1886. Whilst its exact date remains uncertain, it must therefore date to at least the late 19th century, if not earlier. {2} White's Directory of 1882 lists Thomas Clixby and Charles Marshall as blacksmiths within the village, and it may be that either (or indeed both) worked at these premises at that time. {3}
