Full Description
St Helen's, Leverton, C14th and later, is late decorated and perpendicular, with a brick clerestorey added in 1728. The church was restored 1891-2. In normal use. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
St Helen's has a two-bay chapel attached to the south side of the chancel, thought to be the chantry chapel of the person who paid for the construction of the chancel, which has a triple sedilia. The chancel arch, west tower and north aisle windows are all Perpendicular, while the clerestorey appears to be Perpendicular but is actually a 1728 brick addition which was refaced in stone and made Perpendicular by James Fowler, who restored the church in 1882-83. Internally the five-bay arcades are Decorated. The font is octagonal and Perpendicular in style. {6}
St Helen's has a three-stage west tower with a parapet. The south aisle has a piscina, as does the chancel, and a rood-loft doorway and turning-stair can be found at the east end of the nave. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.{7}
Stained glass in this church, some of which is in situ, dates variously to about 1350-75 AD, and to the 14th-15th centuries. {8}
