Full Description

Late Medieval features were uncovered during a trial trench evaluation on land at St John's Street, Holbeach, in August 2001. The features were encountered cut into a silt deposit at a depth of 900mm below surface level. Four pits and a posthole were identified, from which finds were recovered including an iron hoop from a wooden barrel, as well as waterlogged leather offcuts and pottery dating to the 15th century. The wooden barrel appeared to have been intentionally placed at the bottom of the pit, presumably for storage. The pit had been recut in the 19th century, however, at which point most of the barrel appears to have been removed, and no evidence of what was being stored was found. {1}{2}
