Full Description

One of two corn exchanges erected in Market Rasen in 1854/1855, designed by Bellamy and Hardy and built at a cost of around £1800. It was, for a brief time, run in competition with the corn exchange on Queen Street (MLI92182). The building became a market hall in 1856 after the merger of the two rival companies to create The Corn Exchange and Market Hall Company Limited. Constructed of dressed limestone with an ornate entrance flanked by pillars on the southeast corner of the building. An inscription (presumably a later addition) above the entrance read 'Town Hall'. {1} In the late 19th or early 20th century it was bought by a Mr John W. Watson and used for a while as a town hall. In 1914 it was purchased by a Mr J. A. Badley of Spalding who converted it into a cinema. It was finally purchased by the Lincoln Co-operative Society in 1959 and demolished the following year to make way for a brutalist brick and glass Co-op store, which is still present on the site. {2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
