Full Description

Former seaside convalescent home, built by the Derbyshire Miners' Welfare Committee, for the recovery of injured miners. Construction started in 1927, and was completed in early 1928, with an opening ceremony being held on Saturday the 10th of March 1928. The ceremony was led by Viscount Chelmsford, the chairman of the National Welfare Committee at that time. The building had been designed by the architect F.H. Bromhead of the firm of Percy B. Houfton and Co. of Chesterfield, and was constructed by W.G. Robson of Sheffield, for a total cost of around £50,000. The structure was designed in a neo-Georgian style, being faced with Loughborough bricks and roofed with Loughborough tiles. A steam boiler on the site provided hot water to all the rooms, and also generated electricity for the site. Provision was made for 170 patients and staff on the site, with the main entrance hall on the eastern side and a large dining hall located off this, in the centre of the ground floor. The building provided recuperation and holiday accommodation for miners recovering from illness and injury, until 2018 when the home closed. The building is thought to have stood empty since then. {1}{2}{3}
