Full Description
A number of small-scale quarry extraction pits are visible as earthworks in this location below Middle Street and to the north-east of South Carlton. They can be clearly discerned on the ground, and as grassed-over earthworks on the Bing Maps aerial photographic and Google Maps satellite imagery layers. The quarries would have been dug to extract stone from the limestone cliff here, for likely use as construction material in South Carlton. The exact date of extraction is not certain, but likely dates to some point in the medieval or post-medieval periods. {1}{2}{3}
