Full Description

A mound identified by the ordnance survey in 1965 as flat topped, sharply profiled and about three metres high. Possibly flood refuges or windmill mounds and certainly medieval. {1} In the late 1960s there was an excavation of part of the mound (the eastern one of the two in the southern corner of field at TF366419. The finds to date (1970) include a medieval pot in the upper levels.{3} Following the removal of moraine by the farmer the lower part of the mound produced a few tools, flakes and a sherd of middle Bronze Age pottery. This suggested that the mound might be a Bronze Age barrow. On the upper part of the mound medieval Toynton ware and Stamford ware pottery was found, also some bone, mussel shells and cockle shells.{2}{4} The mounds here have also been interpreted as medieval windmill mounds (see PRN12762).
