Full Description
Two Iron Age features, a clay lined pit with a burnt stones, and a possible enclosure ditch were recorded during geophysical survey {1} and trial trenching {2}{3}. Both features were identified in the same trench in the northeast of the site, with pottery recovered being of either uncertain prehistoric date, or Early to Middle Iron Age.
The pit was found to be clay lined which in conjunction with the burnt stones within may suggest direct burning or water heating. A large stone was placed at the centre of the base of the pit, and was surrounded with smaller cracked cobbles/pot boilers; the excavators suggested this may be a structured, deliberate deposit.
The ditch displayed symmetrical 45 degree sides, with a steep change of slope at the base in an "ankle breaker" fashion often seen in Roman defences. A pot was recorded at the bottom of the ditch which may have been completely or largely complete at the point of deposition.
