Full Description

Geophysical magnetometry survey in 2020 recorded an area of rectilinear enclosures with associated linear features. The features are collectively suggestive of a former field system, and although no date has been suggested the regular, rectilinear nature is suggestive of a Roman or later date. The features were found to be truncated or masked by the remains of RAF Fiskerton, and may be truncated by ridge and furrow to the south. {1} A follow up scheme of trial trenching partially targeted on the geophysical anomolies recorded intercutting and parallel ditches, along with a small quantity of Roman pottery, worked animal bone (pig, sheep/goat), although environmental sampling did not produce any archaeologically significant finds. {2}{3} It seems likely the site represents Roman agricultural activity. Only two sherds of pottery were recovered, one seemingly being part of a Roman flagon, and the other of more uncertain date being of possible very late Iron Age or Roman date.
