The deliberate, possibly siege-related backfilling of late medieval and early post-medieval ditches and pits was observed during excavation in an area likely related to the castle grounds.

Full Description
An area of late medieval and early post-medieval occupation comprising an enclosure, several intercutting ditches, pits, and a probable pond identified through sampling were recorded during open excavation in 2021. The early history of the site is uncertain but parallels with Bolingbroke Castle itself and the features associated with it suggest a possible earliest date of the 13th or 14th century. What is more certain is the backfilling of the features, which appears to have occurred in the early post-medieval period based on the material recovered which broadly is dated no later than the 17th or 18th century.
The relative lack of pottery has been taken to suggest the land was earmarked for a particular use, possibly associated with the castle.
The assemblage of finds identified from the backfilling is varied, but includes a number of domestic items; keys, cauldron fragments, soup skimmers, copper alloy bowls, and a spoon, as well as a quantity of window glass. {1}{2}
