Full Description

Three salterns were identified during geophysical survey in 2014. Strong positive spikes were noted in the centre of the features representative of burning, surrounded by a ring of previously burnt material. Magnetic anomolies associated with creeks and streams were also recorded, which while natural would likely have fed the salt making works. {1}{2} While no dating evidence was identified during the survey, further salterns to the immediate northwest were found to be of Iron Age date. {3}{4} Follow up excavations comprising a strip map record, and more targetted monitoring, did not identify any archaeological remains on the site. It was noted by the excavated that alluvial deposits between 0.45m and 2m in depth were encountered, but that it was possible that excavations were not of sufficient depth to encounter the salterns identified in geophysical survey. {5}{6}
