Full Description

A sub-square posthole with rounded corners cutting into the natural chalk was excavated and found to contain a square shanked nail, and a fragment of a casting mould for metal. The nail was believed to have been smithed, which gives a broad date range as smithed nails are known from the later prehistoric until the 19th century, although they began to be replaced around 1700 as manufacturing methods changed. The mould fragment was too small for further interpretation although it was noted as having a dark reduced interior. A single abraded sherd of Bourne-type medieval fabric dating to between the mid 12th and 14th centuries was recovered from the topsoil in the trench. {1}{2}
