Full Description
A minimum total of four apparent cremation vessels were recorded during trial trenching at Land of Glebe Road, Donington on Bain. Two of the pots were nearly complete, with two being significantly damaged. It was considered likely the vessels have suffered damage from later dating agriculture and from the mechanical excavation during the trenching, and that may explain why only two actual cremations were recorded. The date of the urns is uncertain, with the excavators consulting various specialists. The pottery forms are comperable to those in the archaeological record from the Late Bronze Age onwards, although they also show some similiarity with Saxon cremation urns. Based on the verified presence of human remains, the excavation of the trench was halted and so it is considered possible that further human remains are present on the site. {1}{2}
