Full Description
A medieval building including portions of a wall was recorded in the northwest of a stripped area associated with the construction of a new retail unit in November 2020. The walls of the building are made of chalk, with a small area of chalk incasing flint. It seems likely the remains represent more than one building, although only one was definitively recorded. An occupation layer including associated debris, a dump containing a large quantity of broadly local medieval pottery were also recorded. Animal remains were suggestive of sheep farming, which is typical for the period in the area. Several areas of gravel interpreted as a deliberately made surface, and a possible yard or path were also recorded. {1}{2}
It is noted that an earier scheme (ELI13271) of geotechnical trial pits, augering, on the site including one in the area of the building found no features, deposits, or finds. {3}
