Full Description

Three trial trenches excavated in July 2021 East of Church Street and South of Bicker Road, Donington, recorded evidence for medieval settlement. Both shallow and deep ditches were recorded on both north to south, and east to west orientations. The features were considered suggestive of a small landscape of rectilinear enclosed plots, and boundary ditches. The pottery recorded dates to between the 10th to 15th century, suggesting the possibility for early medieval settlement in the area. A small quantity of animal bone was also recorded and was considered not sufficient to suggest large scale agriculture, which in conjunction with the absence of ridge and furrow on the site and the domestic and unabraded nature of the pottery suggests direct settlement activity. {1}{2}
