Full Description
The Queen's Head hotel and public house is believed to date to 1849, at which point it was built to accommodate the railway running adjacent to the site, with the associated station (MLI54110) opened in the same year. Mapping from 1849 names a "Lodge" on the site, with the 1851 census naming a "Railway Tavern". By 1856, the first reference to The Queen's Head appears in White's Directory. Ordnance Survey mapping dating to 1886 and 1905 show buildings occupying what is now the southern range of the site, although they are not connected. Further extensions were built c.1999 at which point the current footprint was largely established. During a site visit as part of a heritage impact assessment in March 2023, it was found that the oldest surviving fabric appears to date to c.1849 along the southern wing, with 20th century alterations observed which corroborate the historic mapping. Elements of the 19th century group appear to have been demolished, some of which are now overlain by late 20th and early 21st century additions. {1}
