Full Description

The base of a Roman greyware pottery vessel was found in this location in September 2024, during beachcombing at Gibraltar Point. The vessel had a flat, circular base, measuring roughly 8cm in diameter. It had quite steeply pitched sides, suggesting a more likely use as a storage jar or jug, rather than being a serving vessel or plate. The edges of the vessel had been worn smooth, indicating it had spent some time in the tidal area, being rounded by the sea. The pottery was retained by the finder. {1} Further sherds of Roman greyware pottery have been found in the same rough vicinity, during beachcombing conducted in December 2024. This additional assemblage was comprised of a further basal sherd, from a narrower, pedestal type vessel or bowl, along with two angular body sherds. As before, all the edges of the sherds had been worn smooth, indicating they had likely spent some time in the tidal area, being rounded by the sea. The pottery was again retained by the finders. {2} Earlier finds of similar Roman greyware were made in the same rough location, during beachcombing conducted in about 2020. This earlier assemblage included a number of body sherds, and a spiral-bottomed base sherd. An additional body sherd of Roman greyware was also found in this area in February 2025, again during beachcombing at Gibraltar Point. As with the other finds, all the edges of the sherds had been worn smooth, indicating they had likely spent some time in the tidal area, being rounded by the sea. The pottery was again retained by the finder. {3}
