Full Description
Excavations recorded evidence for probable marginal land of agricultural character dated to between the Late Iron Age, and Early to Mid Roman, with a significant primary dump of 1st century domestic material suggestive of nearby settlement. Of nine trial trenches excavated on the site, activity was found to be focused on the southern portion towards The Hoplands despite evidence for modern landscaping on the site, which in places has contributed to the survival of the archaeology by raising the land surface.
The majority of the archaeology comprised small pits and gullies, with environmental evidence suggesting wind blown detritus has built up within their fills. No structural remains pre-dating the modern period were identified on the site which taken with the environmental sampling results and overal paucity of material from the site as a whole is suggestive of marginal land.
The overwelming majority of datable evidence was recovered from a single trench, with trench 9 representing 400 of 413 total sherds of pottery, and 1030 of 1210 pieces of animal bone including a large dump of domestic waste located in a ditch. Broadly the dating evidence on the site is of transitional date, from the Late Iron Age to the Early Roman with nothing post-dating the 2nd century beyond a single, abraded sherd of samian pottery.
