Full Description
Romano-British occupation site, revealed by excavations by G. Bullivant from 1968 onwards. Sherds of Romano-British pottery were found, including a mortaria base, Samian, sherds of Nene Valler Colour-Coated ware and Shelly ware. A Romano-British quern of local sand or carr stone was also recovered, the top stone of which had a raised hopper, similar to an example cited by E.C. Curren. Further fragments of quernstones were also recovered - 1 of Niedermendig Lava, and 3 of probable Millstone Grit. Considerable quantities of bone were also identified. Samples of wheat, rye and barley were identified by B. Alvey. Further finds included a Grey ware cheese press, a spindle whorl in Grey ware and several 3rd to 4th century coins.
Continuing excavation in the 1970s uncovered a probable circular hut and corn-drying kiln and late Roman coins. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
Further excavations in 1975 revealed a rectangular hut of wattle and daub, the eastern side of which was c.4.3m long. A hearth was to one corner. Finds recovered included coins of late 3rd century date, sherds of mortaria and Samian, worked jet and fragments of bone. {8}
The excavations of the hut site continued in 1976, when a complete plan of the hut was obtained. The structure was 11.25m long by 3.45m wide at the western end. There were hearths at both ends of the structure, one of which was thought to largely be possibly used for boiling shellfish, with the other being more utilitarian and domestic in nature. Finds recovered from the site included a small bone pipe with four finger-holes. {9}
