Full Description

A series of probable gravel and sand extraction pits at Stonefield House. The pits appear to be broadly aligned, although the mixed dating of the finds recovered from the pit fills is not strongly suggestive of a particular date. It seems likely resource extraction was undertaken from the medieval period through until around the 18th century, with residual material also suggesting some later early medieval activity in the immediate vicinity. It is possible that the name Stonefield House derrives from the practive of resource extraction on the site, although this is conjectural. {1}{2}
