Full Description

A shallow ditch cut oriented broadly east to west was recorded during trial trenching at Water House, Main Street, Burton by Lincoln in an area with known Roman archaeology including a possible villa site immediately to the west (MLI50556). The feature was interpreted as a possible trackway due to two slight depressions evenly spaced at the base of the feature, although it was noted that this may be root disturbance. The fill of the ditch contained 13 sherds of mid to late 3rd century pottery, as well as a small quantity of tegula and imbrex. Later dating material was identified but was considered likely intrusive. Palaeoenvironmental evidence showed some limited evidence for spelt wheat, a single chared hazelnut shell, and charred fruit. {1}{2}
