Full Description

There were formerly four mounds, each about a quarter of a mile from Rochford Tower (these were possibly look-outs). Those to the south-east and the north-east had been levelled by 1856. See PRN12757 for the mound to the south (Toothill). The fourth mound could not be located from either maps or aerial photographs.{1}{2} This feature has been ploughed down to an amorphous platform, maximum height 0.4m. The soil shows a slightly higher colour than that of the adjacent ground, but nothing of interest was found.{1} Arms and armour, possibly of the Cromwellian period, was seen by a farmer levelling the north-west beacon by Rochford Tower. {3} A 'beacon' is marked on the Ordnance Survey six inch map beside a small squarish earthwork in the bend of a field boundary. {4} A programme of archaeological fieldwalking was undertaken on land to the south of Wainfleet Road, Fishtoft. The fieldwalking failed to identify the presence of any 17th century earthworks.{5}{6}
