Full Description

Following a scheme of geophysics {1} evaluation trenching recorded a small area of Iron Age settlement. The northern-most trenches were considered more reflective of possible agricultural activity, with a possible enclosure identified, although the remains of a ploughed out round house or ring ditch may have been present. By comparison the southern-most trenches had a greater density of finds, including Middle and Late Iron Age shell gritted pottery and jar sherds, and pieces of fired clay. Additionally environmental sampling identified an area of burning, including heather and a possible legume which would be indicative of a hearth or oven. A loom weight, considered quite large by weight, was also recovered from the southern area. While test pitting was quickly abandoned with oversight from the Archaeological Planning Officer, a small quantity of Neolithic or Bronze Age flint was recorded in the topsoil in the northwest corner of the site, and in the southeast. {2}{3}
