Full Description
The approximate location of a Roman lead tank, identfied during metal detecting but left in situ and later excavated archaeologically. Concurrent geophysical survey undertaken to give context to the find indicates the presence of an archaeologically dense area including evidence for trackways, enclosures, possible structures, and pits. {1}{2}
The excavation was deliberately targeted to just the recovery of the tank, which may have been used as a font. Analogues are found across the East of England and typically date to the Late Roman period where it is thought they were used as decorated babtismal fonts before falling from religious fashion. The tanks are often deliberately and carefully dismantled and damaged before being deposited. The example at Dunston was cut with a chisel, folded in half, and stabbed.
It is unclear whether the trends identified in the geophysical survey pre-date, post-date, or directly relate to the tank, however a concentration of finds reported through the Portable Antiquities Scheme in close proximity to the findspot and correlating with the results of the geophysical survey are predominantly Roman, and dated broadly to the 3rd and 4th centuries. {3}
