Full Description

The White Cottage was the subject of a programme of historical research, conducted in June 2024, to inform proposed alterations. The building is thought to have been originally constructed c.1760 as a timber-framed house, though has been subject to considerable alterations and addtions, including the replacement of the original thatched roof with pantiles at some point. Considerable re-building of the structure occurred in 1990, after a tanker vehicle crash caused significant damage to the western end. The building had mistakenly been previously thought to be a former Primitive Methodist Chapel, depicted in this area on historic maps. That chapel is now known to have been on the opposite side of the road to the White Cottage, and was demolished c.1945 (see MLI87120). {1}
