Summary

Ditches and gullies associated with Late Iron Age and Early Roman pottery were exacavated in trial trenches in 2020. Additionally a quantity of briquetage was considered evidenve for saltmaking in the area.

Full Description

Ditches and gullies associated with Late Iron Age and Early Roman pottery were exacavated in trial trenches in 2020. The pottery was predominantly dated to the late 1st, and early 2nd centuries AD, with a smaller presence of transitional Late Iron Age to Early Roman, and 3rd century material. Additionally briquetage was considered evidence for saltmaking in the area, however the small quantity was not considered diagnostic of saltmaking on the site itself. An area of burning and evidence for grain processing was also recorded. {1}{2} The activity on the site may be related to comperable Roman archaeology to the immediate southeast (MLI97422).
