THERE WAS A CHAPEL AT FENNE, DEDICATED TO ST. MICHAEL. IT WAS PROBABLY SITUATED NEAR THE 'BALL' PUBLIC HOUSE AT TF34934508 AT THE JUNCTION OF THE BOSTON - WAINFLEET ROAD AND THE LANE LEADING TO ROCHFORD TOWER. THE DATE OF FOUNDATION IS NOT KNOWN BUT A CHURCH AT FENNE IS MENTIONED IN 1300. FENNE WAS A HAMLET, HUNDRED OR DIVISION WHICH FORMED PART OF FISHTOFT PARISHES AT A VERY EARLY PERIOD. AIR PHOTOGRAPHS - 541:568:3166-7, JUNE 1950 - NEGATIVE. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} EXTENSIVE ROAD IMPROVEMENTS HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF BALL HOUSE PUBLIC HOUSE. NO ECCLESIASTICAL REMAINS WERE NOTED, NOR WAS THERE SURFACE EVIDENCE OF DESERTION IN THE ADJACENT CULTIVATION. THE NAME 'FENNE' IS NOT KNOWN LOCALLY.{1}
