Full Description

A ditch segment 8m long and at least 2.5m deep was recorded during an archaeological watching brief at Butler's Cottage, Tathwell Hall, New Lane, Tathwell in September 2022. The ditch was not fully excavated and no dating material was recovered. The size of the ditch was considered to be in excess of what may be expected from a boundary or drainage ditch associated with the existing hall (1842 AD), and instead may represent part of a former moated enclosure. The ditch was cut by the foundation trench for the existing boundary wall, giving a latest possible date of c.1846. {1}{2}
