Full Description

Former National School adjacent to St Botolph's Church, Saxilby. A one and a half/two storey building of rendered and painted brick, under a pitched gabled slate roof with three roof dormers on the south elevation. Wide single storey porch with a stone shield above the doorway. Modern alterations include a single storey extension at the west end of the south elevation and a possible raising of the roof height to provide a second storey. The eastern wing of the building, with a street-facing cross gable, may have been used as accommodation for a teacher. It has a single lateral stack. On the 1st Edition 25 Inch Ordnance Survey map (1885) appares to have a separate garden to the south of the building. {1}{2} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that the National School was erected in 1845. Between the National School and the infant school built in 1871 (see MLI126412), education was provided for 150 pupils. {3}
