Full Description
Cropmarks of a Bronze Age round barrow, to the east of North Willingham. Visible as a ring ditch measuring 16m in diameter, straddling the remains of an earlier Neolithic long barrow (see MLI54249). {1}{2}{3}{4}
Further analysis of the aerial photographic evidence show the remains of the round barrow as cropmarks, with traces of a shallow earthwork also possibly surviving. The barrow has an internal diameter measuring 22m. It presumably re-used some of the mound material from the earlier long barrow in its construction. {5}{6}{7}
Both the long barrow and surmounting round barrow in this location were scheduled in April 2024. Although both barrows have been degraded by ploughing, the survival of both monuments as buried features had been confirmed by a geophysical survey, conducted in 2018, along with the cropmarks noted on aerial photography. The barrows lie just below the crest of a hill, on a west-facing slope overlooking a valley of a tributary of the River Rase to the south. The Bronze Age round barrow surmounts an earlier Neolithic long barrow, and may have re-used some of its mound material in its construction. The round barrow has a diameter of 25m and is defined by a single ditch measuring around 1.6m wide. A break in the ditch at the east end measures around 5.3m wide. Valuable archaeological deposits will be preserved on the buried ground surface and in the fills of the ditches. These will provide rare information concerning the dating and construction of the monuments and the sequence of mortuary practices at the site. The same deposits will also retain environmental evidence illustrating the nature of the landscape in which the monuments were set. {8}
