Full Description

A former post-medieval plantation is depicted in this area to the north of South Ormsby, on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The plantation is named as Washdyke Walk Plantation on the map, and is shown as a roughly oval-shaped area of tree planting. The plantation continues to be depicted on mid 20th century OS maps, but is not extant on an aerial photograph of this area taken in 1971, and is therefore thought to have been removed in the 1960s. {1}{2} The site of the former plantation is visible as cropmarks on more recent aerial photographs of this area, taken in 2011. The cropmarks show the roughly oval shape of the former plantation boundary, measuring roughly 63m by 36m. The eastern side of the plantation is slightly more square in shape, and seems to have a possible entrance gap measuring 2m wide. Cropmarks of pit-like features within the enclosure are thought to relate to the removal of the former trees. The plantation seems to overlie cropmarks of an undated (though likely earlier) rectilinear enclsoure in this area (see MLI85154). {3}
