Full Description
The barracks and parade ground at Burton Road was opened in 1878 and is still in military use. The complex was built to provide additional accomodation and training facilities for military units stationed in Lincoln, alongside that of the earlier barracks built further south on Burton Road in 1857 (see MLI91541). These new barracks were built at a cost of nearly £48,000, with construction being completed in October 1878. They initially served as the depot for the first and second battalions of the Lincolnshire Regiment (10th Foot), and for the Royal North Lincolnshire Militia. All of the structures at the barracks were brick-built and designed in a similar castellated style to the earlier barracks on Burton Road. The barracks was comprised of a main 'keep' building, with officers' quarters located adjacent to the parade ground. A hospital, laundry and quarters for married men were located on the north side of the parade ground. A substantial perimeter wall with bastions at each corner enclosed the whole complex.
The barracks soon became known as the Sobraon Barracks, in reference to the Lincolnshire Regiment's action at the Battle of Sobraon (northern India) in 1846; this being the decisive battle of the Anglo-Sikh Wars.
The barracks are still in military use as an Army Reserve centre, with parts of the original 'keep' building and perimeter wall still surviving, though significant changes to the layout have occurred with newer structures added and much of the older structures removed. {1}
