Full Description

The remains of a number of intercutting medieval features were recorded in this location in March 2016, during trial trenching on land off Watery Lane in Goulceby. Three sherds of Toynton Medieval ware, dating to the 13th to 15th century, and one abraded sherd of Saxo-Norman Lincoln sandy ware were recovered from a north northwest-south southeast aligned ditch. Two sherds of mid-late 11th to 12th century Stamford Ware were recovered from a shallow north-south aligned ditch. These features and two undated ditches were sealed by a possible medieval buried soil. This was then cut by a large west southwest-east northeast aligned ditch, from which one sherd of Lincoln Shelly ware, one sherd of Toynton Medieval ware, and 18 sherds from a single vessel of Toynton Late Medieval ware, dating to 1450-1550, were recovered. The buried soil was also cut by two other ditches for which no firm date could be established. Several of these features truncated two Late Saxon ditches identified at the same location (see MLI126925). {1}{2}
