Full Description

The remains of a number of Late Saxon features were recorded in this location in March 2016, during trial trenching on land off Watery Lane in Goulceby. Four sherds of Lincoln kiln-type Shelly ware and one sherd of Lincoln shelly ware, dating to the late 10th and 11th century, were recovered from an east-west aligned ditch, and five sherds of Lincoln kiln-type Shelly ware and two sherds of Lincoln shelly ware were recovered from a west southwest-east northeast aligned ditch. Both ditches were sealed by a possible medieval ploughsoil and truncated by later medieval features (see MLI126926). A pit or ditch terminus was assumed to be of Late Saxon date, as it was sealed by the possible medieval ploughsoil and truncated the east-west aligned ditch. {1}{2}
