THE HOSPITAL OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST, 'WITHOUT BOSTON', WAS FOUNDED BEFORE 1282 FOR POOR MEN. IN THE 14TH CENTURY THE ADVOWSON WAS IN THE FAMILY OF MOULTON BUT IN 1480, IT WAS GRANTED BY THE ABBOT AND CONVENT OF ST MARY'S , YORK TO THE PRIOR OF THE HOSPITAL OF ST JOHN OF JERUSALEM. IT WAS DISSOLVED BEFORE 1540 AND WAS SAID BY LELAND TO HAVE BEEN IN EXISTENCE IN HIS TIME. {2}{3}{4}{5} THOMPSON SAYS THAT A ROW OF HOUSES ON THE EAST SIDE OF HIGH STREET, IMMEDIATELY NORTH OF ST ANNE'S LANE WAS FORMERLY CALLED THE HOSPITAL HOUSE AND ARE PERHAPS THE HOSPITAL IN QUESTION. A HOSPITAL OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST EXISTED AT SKIRBECK (NOW PART OF BOSTON) - SEE 12696 - BUT ALL AUTHORITIES TREAT THE BOSTON HOSPITAL AS A SEPARATE ESTABLISHMENT.{1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} NO REMAINS OF THIS HOSPITAL COULD BE IDENTIFIED, NOR COULD THE SECRETARY OF BOSTON ARCHAEOLOGICAL GROUP SUGGEST A SITE.
