Full Description
Former school. Originally a one and a half storey brick building, it has been heavily altered to reduce the roof pitch and create a second storey. One infilled arched window can be seen on the street-facing elevation. The building is whitewashed, and is roofed in slate with a single ridge stack. The raised section of roof is hipped while the western end of the building, which likely remains at the original height, is gabled and has a steeper pitch. {1}
No school is mentioned in White's 1872 Trade Directory, but a Miss Emma Stafford is listed as a National schoolmistress. {2}
The school is shown on both the 1889 and 1907 OS maps of Canwick. On the 1889 map it comprises a single range aligned with the streetfront with a porch to the front and rear, but by 1907 the rear porch had been demolished and the front porch either extended or replaced. {3}{4}
