Full Description

A former level crossing keepers cottage at Dam Gate. The crossing was on part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway line between Spalding and King's Lynn, this part of which opened in July 1862. The cottage is depicted on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. It was built to the standardised design that appeared on all the manned crossings of the Holbeach to Sutton Bridge stretch of the larger line. The basic design was a two-storey building with a narrow rectangular plan form, constructed of red brick with a pitched slate roof. The cottage was converted to a private residence after the closure of the railway line in April 1965, and is still extant, although some alterations seem to have been made, including the replacement of the original windows and the addition of an extension to the north. {1}{2}{3}{4}
