Full Description

A former level crossing keepers cottage at Hundreds Lane. The crossing was on part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway line between Spalding and King's Lynn, this part of which opened in July 1862. The cottage is depicted on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. It would have been built to the standardised design that appeared on all the manned crossings of the Holbeach to Sutton Bridge stretch of the larger line. The basic design was a two-storey building with a narrow rectangular plan form, constructed of red brick with a pitched slate roof. The cottage survived extant for some years after the closure of the railway line in April 1965, but was demolished at some point between 2007 and 2009, as seen on the Google Earth satellite imagery layers and Google Streetview. {1}{2}{3}{4}
