Full Description

Former school. Two storey building of coursed stone, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Two ridge stacks. Ashlar quoins and window dressings. The street-facing gable end has a dedication stone in the shape of a scroll, mostly illegible but possibly giving the date '1852'. {1} White's 1856 Trade Directory notes that Ancaster had a schoolmistress, a Deborah Garner. In 1872 a Mr John Hill was National schoolmaster. {2}{3} The school is shown in its current plan form on the 1888 and 1905 OS maps of Ancaster. {4}{5} The building ceased to be used as a school at some point prior to 1986, when the new primary school buildings on Mercia Drive were erected. {6}
