Full Description

Former school. Single storey red brick building, under a pitched gabled slate roof. Gabled porch with stone lintel above door and datestone reading '1847' on gable end. Significant modern alteration appears to have taken place including the replacement of windows with uPVC and a brick extension to the south of the original structure. {1} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the school was built in 1847 and was at that time being run as a National School. {2} The building can be seen as a small single range, with porch, on the 1905 OS map of the village {3} The school was under threat of closure in the mid-late 1980s due to declining attendance. In the 1986/1987 school year, only 31 pupils were taught at Foston. It is unclear how soon after this the school was closed. {4}
