Full Description

Three former school buildings, all of red brick under roofs of slate. The northernmost building is a one and a half/two storey building under a steeply pitched gabled roof, with a tall spired bell tower. It has polychromatic brick banding and decorative ceramic ridge tiles. The southern building is a large two storey building with a half-hipped and gabled roof, and two tall lateral stacks. It has white brick banding. The eastern building is more simple in style, with a pitched gabled roof of slate and little decorative brickwork. It has one tall lateral stack. The boundary wall is similar in style to the northern building, with black brick banding at its base and either side of the plinth tiles. It is coped in black tile with a dentil course beneath consisting of red brick headers and burnt brick stretchers. It is likely that the wall originally ran across the full frontage of the curtilage. {1} It is likely that the two western buildings and boundary wall were built at the same time in the late 19th century. Both buildings can be seen on the 1889 OS map of Sedgebrook, and all three constructions are similar in style. The eastern building is not shown on that map, but does appear on the 1904 OS map, suggesting a later construction date. {2}{3} White's 1872 Trade Directory notes that the school charity was founded in 1718 by Dame Margaret Thorold. The school was rebuilt in 1820, though it is unclear if this building was on the current site. It is likely that the current buildings on this site were built in the later 19th century after a redistribution of the charity's funds mentioned by White in 1872. {4} The school was closed in 1984, with pupils transferred to Allington with Sedgebrook C.E. School. {5}
