Full Description

19th century school building. One/two storey building of coursed limestone, under a pitched gabled tile roof. Ashlar quoins and window detailing. A datestone above the door reads '1835'. There are a number of significant modern extensions to the east and south of the original building. {1} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the Free School in Barkston was rebuilt in 1835 along with a house for the teacher. {2} In the mid-1960s, Syston school was closed and its pupils transferred to Barkston school. {3}
