Full Description

Site of a former school and probable schoolmaster's house. A Free School was founded in Great Ponton in 1717 by William Archer, Esq., and in the mid-19th century the schoolmaster had a residence and an endowment of £50 per year to fund the education of all the children of the parish. White's 1872 Trade Directory stated that the School Trust had lapsed, but had since been revived by the Endowed Schools Commissioners, and a new school was about to be built. {1}{2} The 1888 and 1904 OS maps both show the building marked as a school, in a T-shape plan form, on the west side of the Great North Road. It shares a curtilage with another building assumed to be the schoolmaster's house, which has a separate garden to the south. {3}{4} The school was closed in the mid-20th century and demolished in 1960 to make way for the reconstruction of the section of the Great North Read between Colsterworth and Little Ponton. {5}
