Full Description

Former school. One and a half storey rendered and colourwashed brick building, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Dentil course below eaves, plaque showing coat of arms and the date '1869' on the northeast corner of the building. Ashlar window surrounds. {1} The building is shown in its current T-shape plan form on the 1905 OS map. {2} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that the school was originally founded in 1780 by William Welby, Esq. In 1869 the Baronet of Denton, the local landowner, had this new school built, with the old school converted into a house for the teacher. {3} The school was closed at some point in the second half of the 20th century.
