Full Description
The White Horse was an inn established by 1792. {1} The original White Horse ,which stood in White Horse Lane, closed in 1680 and the license was subsequently transferred to this premises on West Street. The White Horse had its own brewery and stables to the rear. The three and a half storey main range was constructed of brick with a pitched slate roof with a central dormer window and gable chimney stacks. The ground floor front had a central doorway flanked by two Georgian sash windows with keystones. The first floor had a central statue of a horse flanked by an oriel window to the left and a Georgian sash window to the right. The third floor was comprised by three sash windows with keystones and plain sills. To the left of The White Horse there was a passageway which went under the adjacent building, 15 West Street, and to the rear yard of the inn. The White Horse was demolished in the 1950s along with half of the adjacent building where the passageway to the rear yard led. {2}
