White's 1872 Trade Directory states that a Free School was founded in Cowbit in 1712 by Thomas Andrew. A schoolhouse was given to the school in 1800 by William Guy and in 1849 this was replaced by a schoolroom and house for the teacher, given by a Major-General Dyson. The current building, a 'spacious schoolroom', was erected in 1870 and was attended in 1872 by 90 pupils. {2}
