Full Description

19th century school building. One/two storey red brick building in a cross-wing plan, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Coped gables. Two ridge stacks. Dressed ashlar window surrounds and quoins. The central gable has a stone coat of arms. Several modern brick classroom buildings have been added to the site in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. {1} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that a Free School was founded in Cowbit in 1712 by Thomas Andrew. A schoolhouse was given to the school in 1800 by William Guy and in 1849 this was replaced by a schoolroom and house for the teacher, given by a Major-General Dyson. The current building, a 'spacious schoolroom', was erected in 1870 and was attended in 1872 by 90 pupils. {2}
